Is Your Garage Door Sounding Off? 3 Repair Issues That Manifest With Noise

Blog

When a garage door that has operated quietly in the past begins to make noise, homeowners will want to pay attention. If the sound occurs just once or happens only in specific situations, such as when humidity levels are very high, the problem is probably not a serious one and will only require a cursory examination and a bit of lubricant to address.

However, if the noise given off by your garage door is persistent or seems to worsen with each use, professional repairs, like those discussed below, may be necessary to resolve the problem.

High-pitched squeaking or squealing noises

Squeaking or squealing sounds that emanate from a garage door are usually caused when metal surfaces are forced to rub together or when some type of foreign material is caught between moving metal parts. For example, if an acorn or twig is lodged in the rollers, the object may cause the garage door to squeak or squeal during the opening or closing process.

Damaged rollers or tracts that have moved out of alignment can also result in squeaking or squealing sounds that continue to become more pronounced as the damage or alignment issue worsens. Homeowners who hear either of these sounds regularly should have the rollers and tracts checked and lubricated or adjusted as quickly as possible.

Grinding noises emanating from the area of the opener

Loud, grinding noises that seem to come from the area where the garage door opener is located are usually caused by a problem with either the gears or chains that lift and lower the door. Initially, grinding sounds may signal that the gears need lubrication or a jam has occurred. If not corrected quickly, the metal surfaces of the gears and chains can be damaged from the intense pressure and friction that is creating the grinding sounds. Homeowners who hear any grinding sounds will need to turn off their automatic opener system and use the door manually to prevent further damage until repairs can be made.

Slamming noises during the closing process

Garage doors that make slamming noises or seem to close much more forcefully than they should never be taken for granted. In most cases, this type of noise or action is related to a problem with the springs or chains that hold the door in place and allow it to open and close. If these components become weak, they can no longer hold the door safely in position. Instead, the weight of the door causes it to slam downward, a problem that can damage the door or endanger people and pets.

Homeowners who are hearing any type of strange noises when opening or closing their garage door will want to contact a reputable garage door repair contractor to get expert advice.
