If these hinges become loose or damaged, such as a bend in the plates, the panels no longer move cohesively. As a result, they will shift while the door is in motion, creating the noise that you hear.
If the hinges are loose, you can try to tighten them with a screwdriver. However, if more than a couple are damaged, it may be better to replace the door since damaged hinges will cause shifting of other panels and aggravate the problem.
2. Rollers Are Not Traveling Within the Tracks Correctly
Another potential cause of loud popping noises coming from your garage door could be the rollers. Normally, the rollers travel smoothly within their tracks while the door opens and closes.
However, if the rollers are out of alignment, they may occasionally come out of the tracks. They may roll along one of the outer edges of the tracks, but when they come back into alignment, they will fall back into the space and create the sound you hear.
The main reason that the rollers become knocked out of alignment with the tracks is that the tracks themselves are no longer even or may have been bent after years of use. While it is possible to replace the tracks, it is often a costly and involved process. Having the entire door system replaced may be a better option if you find out that it would be cheaper to replace the door than have it fixed.
