Garage Door Stuck Open? A Look At Common Causes

Blog

The only thing more frustrating than pushing your garage door button and not having the door open is pushing the button and not having the door close. You may quickly become frustrated if you are not sure how to protect your contents with the door wide open, don't want to let the rain get in, and don't have the first idea of how to fix the problem. Here are some of the common problems that might be coming into play.

There's something in front of the sensor.

This is one of the easiest problems to fix because in this case, nothing is broken at all. The door is just operating as it should. Your garage door is equipped with a sensor that notices when there is something under the door and prevents the door from closing. This is an important safety feature, as it prevents children, pets, and even adults from getting squished under the door as it's closing. Check to make sure there is nothing on the floor or along the side of the garage door tracks that is triggering the sensor.

The lock is engaged.

Some garage doors have a manual lock that you can engage by pulling on a certain string while the door is open. Did someone else in your house unknowingly pull on this string and activate the lock? You may need to check your garage door opener's owner's manual to locate the lock, but it's often painted red for clarity. Pull the string again, and your door might release.

The springs are broken.

Some garage doors have one spring. Others have two. In either case, they are meant to contract to pull the door up and then lengthen as the door goes down. Sometimes they come unattached from the door, which makes the door incapable of moving. This is not something to fix yourself, as the compressed springs can be really dangerous if they fly off. Contact a garage door company if you see any dangling springs.

The door has come off the tracks.

Make sure the wheels that roll the garage door up and down are still set on the tracks. Sometimes they can come off, and the garage door will be being held up by the springs alone. This is another problem you're best off leaving to the professionals to solve.

If your garage door is stuck open, don't get too worried too soon. There may just be a simple problem with a sensor or locking mechanism. And even if the problem is something more serious, the pros can fix the issue for you. Talk to a garage door repair company like Shoff Door Co for help.
