5 Reasons Why Your Garage Door May Not Open

Blog

It can be frustrating to pull up to your garage and the door just won't open. Some problems can be fixed in a few minutes, while others require more extensive repairs or replacement. The following can help you narrow down to the exact reason why your door is failing to operate.

#1: Broken Spring

The garage door is lifted by springs or a combination of springs and cables. The torsion spring, which is the most likely culprit, reaches from the garage door to the automatic opener. The side springs or cables are located near the tracks. Don't try to repair these springs on your own, as they can be dangerous. You can visually inspect them for damage, though, so you can determine if they are the cause.

#2: Alignment Issues

When a door is out of alignment you may hear the motor operate and even see some door movement, but it will fail to open correctly. Alignment issues typically occur when the tracks have either been damaged or shifted out of position. Damaged tracks require professional repair, but you may be able to adjust alignment problems yourself by simply adjusting the alignment screws along the track until the door operates smoothly again.

#3: Remote Problems

A malfunctioning remote is easy to troubleshoot. First, if the door opens fine with the wall button, then the remote is the likely culprit. First, try to replace the battery. Failing that, verify that the photo eyes on both the remote and the automatic opener are clean and unobstructed. If neither of these solve the problem, then replacing the remote is an inexpensive option.

#4: Failed Motor

A failed motor can be obvious. The motor may fail to make any noise or movement regardless of whether you use the remote or wall button. Or, it may make a horrible noise or even smoke if it is in the process of failing. If there are no signs of operation, first verify that the power source to the motor is functioning. If it is, then you need to schedule either a repair or replacement of the motor.

#5: "Locked" Door

There are two ways your garage door could be locked -- the emergency cord could be engaged, thus locking the door into manual mode, or the actual lock on the door could be engaged. Not all garage doors are equipped with a manual key lock, but if yours is then it should remain disengaged at all times if you plan to use your remote opener.
